Pass the CSLB exam within 18 months, or start over

Andre has framed houses for 10 years. He finally applied for his contractor's license. In January, the CSLB accepted his application. He was thrilled. The hard part was over.
Or so he thought.
Work got busy. He pushed his exam back a few months. He took the trade exam in the fall and failed it by a few points. He had to wait before he could try again. Then a big job came in. Then the holidays.
When he finally sat down to schedule, it was too late. Eighteen months had passed. His application was void. New application. New fees. Start over.
The rule
Once your license application is accepted, you have 18 months to pass every required exam. Miss that window, and the application is void. It's not an extension. It's a new application and new fees.
What those 18 months have to cover
- Scheduling your exams through PSI
- Passing the trade exam
- Passing the law and business exam, if required
- Retaking anything you fail, with a required 21-day wait between tries
Eighteen months sounds like plenty. Until a failed try costs you three weeks. And a busy season costs you three months.
The one exception
The void date can be extended up to 90 days if you can show a medical emergency or something truly beyond your control. That's a narrow exception, not a grace period. Don't plan around needing it.
How to beat the clock
- Schedule your exam the week you're accepted.
- Put your 18-month date on your calendar, with a reminder 6 months out.
- If you fail, book the retake right away, the day the 21 days are up.
Why it matters
Every month without a license is a month of jobs you can't bid the way you want to. Get licensed once, on time. It's the fastest way to actually use it.
